Southeast Asia is a foodie’s paradise, but I have to admit, I was a little nervous to start eating street food, or any type of food, as a vegetarian. I have been a vegetarian for close to four years now, and love my meat-free lifestyle. I have to admit that when I meet other vegetarians, or hear that a friend has cut meat out of their life, I do a little happy dance!
Vegetarian travelers, never fear. I have had no problems sticking to meat-free meals while in Southeast Asia. I’m happy to say that Kuala Lumpur (where I will be staying for the next few weeks) has been the easiest place to eat vegetarian in Southeast Asia. Why? I have the help of a fantastic app called KindMeal.
What Is KindMeal?
KindMeal was developed by the founders of PetFinder.my. PetFinder organizes pet adoptions and promotes animal welfare throughout Malaysia. But loving animals goes beyond helping cats and dogs. With KindMeal, tourists and locals alike can adopt a meat-free lifestyle with ease, all while getting a discount on delicious meals. KindMeal is the world’s first meat-free lifestyle platform, helping users save animals (and money)!
I heard about KindMeal while looking at restaurants around Bukit Bitang, where I am currently working and living. KindMeal offered 20% off of a meal at The Toast Co., and how could I say no to that?
Here’s how it works: Download the free app and start browsing for deals based on what’s hot right now or what’s nearby! KindMeal is available all throughout Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, as well as some destinations at other states, and expanding to reach more of Malaysia.
Once you find a restaurant or deal that looks appetizing, click and take a look at the restaurant’s meat-free items. (Not every restaurant is 100% vegetarian.) The app will give you information about the restaurant’s location, ratings, and let you know if eggs, dairy, or alcohol are present on the menu as well. Then, you can pick your deal! A basic discount is typically 10%, but by sharing your location and experience with KindMeal on social media, you can get a better deal, sometimes up to 35%, off your bill!
More Than Just Discounts
The fun doesn’t stop once you’ve paid your bill. KindMeal really wants users to share their wonderful meals and create a community for anyone with a meat-free lifestyle. They’ve created a point system where users can become a Superhero by uploading photos of their tasty meals, interacting with other users, and sharing their KindMoments on social media and through the app. Superheroes can qualify for contests and prizes, and keep track of the lives they’ve saved by eating meat-free.
